What is a Bernedoodle?
Many dog lovers agree that bernedoodles are one of most loyal breeds among its kind. Being a mixed breed between a poodle and a Bernese Mountain Dog, the bernedoodle is a pretty interesting dog breed, thanks to the unique characteristics of two amazing dog breeds. The first parent breed, the Bernese Mountain Dog, is known for being calm and loyal to their owners. These tri-colored coat dogs were originally developed to become all purpose farm helpers because they can be trained to help their masters do a wide variety of tasks, from herding cattle to pulling farm carts. Bernese is a relatively large but friendly dog breed, which makes it an ideal house petㅡit can potentially shoo away potential intruders and at the same time it can be your best friend!
The other parent breed is the Poodle, one of the most famous show dogs that you find in dog competitions. This purebred dog is known for its cleverness and intelligence, making it a favorite of many dog lovers. Poodles are known for their extreme obedience which makes them a highly trainable dog breed, thus their success in competitions. The best part? A Poodle comes in three different sizes; miniature, toy and standard. Perfect for any kind of occasion.
A Bernese + A Poodle = Bernedoodle
Now that you know its parent breeds, it makes sense that a bernedoodle is known to be a clever, gentle and extremely loyal dog breed. They’re widely loved because they’re a low shedding and hypoallergenic dog breed, making them an ideal companion for children or adults who have allergies. A bernedoodle is a perfect combination of the easy-go-lucky Bernese mountain dog and the highly intelligent poodle. The size of a bernedoodle depends on the dam (mother) and the sire (father). So if the poodle parent is the tiny variation, chances are their puppies will also be tiny. A tiny will usually weigh between 10 and 24 pounds, while the mini weighs about 25 to 49 pounds, and the standard bernedoodle usually weighs between 70 and 90 pounds. A tiny Bernedoodle stands anywhere from only 12 to 17 inches, while the mini is usually between 18 and 22 inches and the standard can stand as tall as 29 inches. See the chart below for more clarification!
Bernedoodle Sizes
Weight (lbs) Height (in)
There are three main size designations for Bernedoodles: Tiny 10-24lbs 12-17in, Mini 25-49lbs 18-22in, and Standard 70-90lbs 23-29in. Of these I like something between Mini and Standard, a dog big enough not to have a Napoleon complex, but small enough that I want it around the house. A Bernedoodle’s furry coat is usually wavy and curly, but there’s a chance it will be straight depending on which breed dominates, the Poodle or the Bernese. Again, I have to insert my opinion here, I like a good wavy to slightly curly coat. A general rule of thumb, the more curly, the less shedding, but the more often you brush. That in mind, the choice is yours. Bernedoodles come in different colors, as well. They can be black, black and white, or tri-color just like a Bernese mountain dog. Yes, I have 2 cents to put in here too. I like color, particularly in the face, so with our puppy parents, we specifically brought in the genetics that would give us fun color combinations, but no matter what their coat looks like, Bernedoodles are a beautiful breed and stubbornly loyal. So if you are looking for a designer dog that is perfect for your home, then the Bernedoodle would be an excellent choice!
Ok, here is the part where I give a product recommendation. There are a lot of fancy dog brushes out there and you could spend a lot of money on them, or not. I like this tried and true brush. If you find one that you like better great. This one happens to be really cost effective without being cheap, so it’s a good starting place.
